<personal opinion>
I personally think that is kind of morbid. Believers in Christ shouldn't focus on death, but life. We are here to spread the good news of Christ and how we will have everlasting life and joy with God, but those titles and covers look like they actually glorify death. Something else to think about is... in Heaven when we all get there and we are praising and worshiping God, do you think there will be "Death Metal" singing? No offense, but that's my view.

I'm not sure... I never got the whole screeching and yelling thing. That doesn't sound like praise and worship to me, but I guess we won't know until we get to Heaven.

I like opera music... hehe, just kidding. I never understand what they're saying. smile.gif

I listen to a lot of Praise and Worship songs and other groups... not sure what "type" they are other than that they're Christian.

Some groups I like: Third Day, Fusebox, Steven Curtis Chapman, DC Talk, Newsboys, etc...
Wreath of Barbs
hehe...at the moment im listening to: Converge - Caring and Killing ....... im sure the sound is comparable....heh wink.gif tongue.gif

I have to say, I know it's probably none of my business but, I don't think we should focus on daeth, but on life. I think Christain rock is fine to listen to, but "death metal" doesn't make it ound like something the Lord would appeciate very much. No offense Wreaths of Barb and AlterEgo.

okay...the thing is people are putting way too much importance on the name of a certain genre....yes, its called 'death metal'...but that doesnt mean that all of the songs are about death....i mean look at 'pop music'...pop = explosions, right? so i guess that means that all pop music supports terrorism?

okay, anyway in an effort to prove that death metal can indeed be just as christian as any inane sandi patti or amy grant song here are some lyrics:

Horde:

INVERT THE INVERTED CROSS

the cross of christ
turned upside down
symbol of his supposed defeat
those in darkness
rejoice in this
but the truth is revealed to the chosen
christ stormed the gates of hell
to take the keys thereof
now the keys of death and hades
belong to the enternal one
hell awaits the demonic forces
who seek to prevert the cross
flaming hellfire destruction
is their final dwelling place
so
what remains to be said
invert the inverted cross
the inversion is but a lie
upright it should stand
no longer an inversion
but a symbol of supreme victory

Mortification

Journey Of Reconciliation

His eyes could hardly see the long road ahead
Blood and sweat dripped down His face as He was lead
His body was beaten, far beyond repair
They thought He was just a man
But He was the Son of God

This man was not guilty of any sin
He had done nothing wrong, He was innocent
He chose to take all the world's wrong
And take it down to the abyss

The journey continued to the place called the Skull
Step by step He staggered on, the sky was getting dull
On and on He kept up with this pain He must take
He went through this when will the world wake

Jesus Christ is the only Son of God
He did all this for you because He loved you

Many were weeping many more laughing
Many were mocking many were scorning
This man would do what no one understood
The sacrifice was made by God's own right hand

At last the arrival at Calvary's hill
They tore off his robe and naked He stood
They nailed Him to a cross they got their wish
But in three days they'd never guess

He rose from the grave!
He rose from the dead!
He rose from the grave!
He rose from the dead!

The Destroyer Beholds

Disease in your life rots your soul
Wretched hindrance to your growth in God
Recycle countless sin, bondage brings
Wretched hindrance to your growth in God

Look at the young man
Look at his face
What is the reason for this change
Revival in his heart
Causes havoc for the devil

The destroyer beholds

The destroyer beholds

Your faith infested by the flesh
Backslidden in your heart you have no time for God
You don't read the word, what's your case
Backslidden in your heart you have no time for God

Your God calls your name, you've been saved
You won't be tempted beyond your strength
Reach out to His grace, make a change
You won't be tempted beyond your strength

Paramaecium

The Killing

He was led to the place
Which was called Skull
Driving nails
Into His wrists and heel
Pain

The Christ of prophecy
Hung there until dead
Blood shed

He gave up His spirit
And such was the end

The corpse still warm
Was removed the tree
And sent to its burial

Hewn in rock
This deep, silent tomb

Untombed

At the dawning of the second morning from the execution day
Women approached the private sepulchre where the dead
Messiah lay
They queried amongst themselves as to who would roll the stoneaway
But then when they looked up they saw that providence held sway
On entering the sepulchre where the Son of God had lain
There were strips of cloth, garments of death, but no bodily remains
The angel questioned "Why seek the living among the dead?
He is not here, He is risen, just as He had said."
They killed the author of life but God has raised Him from death
He was not abandoned to the grave, nor did His body see decay
After He had died He rose from the grave, untombed

Now it came to pass as two men walked along Emmaus road
The risen Himself drew near to them, was invited to their abode
And it came to pass as He reclined with them He broke bread as day found night
Their eyes were opened and they knew Him well
Then He vanished from their sight
Whilst the disciples assembled behind locked doors because they feared the Jews
The risen Christ stood in their midst and He uttered "Peace to you."
Filled with fear they trembled thinking Him to be a ghost
But they clearly saw that He was flesh and bone
Killed was the author of life but God has raised Him from death
He was not abandoned to the grave, nor did His body see decay
After He had died He rose from the grave, untombed

[Forty days later]
Then as He was speaking before the eleven
He raised His hands in blessing and ascended to Heaven
Where He is seated at the right hand of God

[this entire album "Exhumed of the Earth" is actually a concept album telling the story of Jesus birth, death and resurrection]

..........anyway, these were just a few that were easy to find, there are THOUSANDS more....

....but my point is this....i really dont think God has a problem with bands that write songs with those lyrics.
AlterEgo
warning: super long post to follow

I remember a Sunday School class I took a few years ago...the teacher was from India and had been raised Hindu. One Sunday he told us how when he was first introduced to Christianity, he thought it was one of the most bloody, morbid, disgusting religions ever...

I mean, think about it...the Bible is full of morbid stuff...in the OT, worshipping God centered on the sacrificial system of the temple...it required death...the priests would sprinkle the blood from the sacrifices on the people...

And today, when we take communion, we are symbolically eating flesh and drinking blood...and we focus on the death of Christ all the time...

I think, because we grow up with this, it seems normal and ordinary. It has been sanitized. But to my Sunday School teacher, it was very obvious just how morbid this all is.

Without the death of Christ, life would not be possible. And if there were not sin and death in this world, Christ's death would not have been neccessary. We forget, sometimes, just how ugly this world is, and how ugly Christ's death was...But God turned the ugliness of a crucifiction into something beautiful and wonderful...He is risen!!! Praise God...we can now be redeemed.

Death, sin and cruelty in this world are a reality...we shouldn't ignore it or gloss over it...lest we not realize our desparate need for redemption. However, I do agree, if we only look at death and sin and despair, and never look further...to the risen Christ who is our hope...then we will remain forever in our despair. BUT...we should and must speak out about the reality of the ugliness in this world to reveal our need for our Redeemer...so people will see just how good the Good News really is...

I made up those titles basically by thinking of the Book of Revelation...

I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood

Rev 6:12

Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood.

Rev 16:4

The last title, "Return of the King", signifies the final triumph over evil...When Christ returns...

Death Metal, as a music genre, simply describes a style of music...it does not mean that the content has to be about death, any more that all country songs must be about farms...Basically, when I came up with my idea, I was thinking about the desolation that would be wrought upon this earth during the last days...that was the inspiration for the band name, and my titles...sorry if this seems less than Christian...

Oh, btw, has anyone ever read "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"?
Wreath of Barbs
Lordian Guard

Sinners in the hands of an Angry God [Based on Jonathan Edwards' classic homily, 1741]

O my friends, my soul cries out to you from the infernal fire
How dreadful it is to suffer the fierceness and wrath of God
for one moment . . . but I must suffer it for all eternity.

There will be no end to this exquisite horrible misery
When I look forward I see a long forever,
a boundless duration before me which devours
my thoughts and terrifies my soul .
For I know certainly that I must wear out long ages,
millions and millions of ages, in wrestling and
conflicting with this divine merciless vengeance.
And when I am so done, when so many ages have
actually been spent in this manner.
In know, that this is all but a point to what remains.

It came upon me unexpected
Like a thief, Death outwitted me
O my foolishness
I was arrogant towards God and man,
pursuing my own vanities
And when I said, "All is well,"
Then, sudden destruction came upon me.

Day of the damned at the throne they stand
Sinners in the hands of the God of man.
Who is the One enthroned in the sky?
Behold it is Christ, in glory and might
Yes He, the One they crucified.

Who can withstand the weight of divine vengeance?
There is no fortress or power that can defend
us from the power of God . . .
For as wax melteth before the fire, so shall the
wicked, at the presence of the Lord.

Vengeance is mine, a thunderous rhyme
A frightening voice to the blasphemous mind
Who is He who roars from the sky?
Behold it is Him, the Conqueror of sin
Yes He, the One they crucified.

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God
The fire awaits my soul
To the chasm of Hell I will go . . .

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God
The fire awaits my soul
For the Devil and demons I know . . .

And who can save me now . . . I don't know.
Or who can wake me from this terror I behold.
Adam
AE: Actually, I do think all country songs sing about farms and stuff... and also their dogs running away. laugh.gif

WOB: Comparing the pop music with terrorism is totally off base. You'd have to go way out of your way to think that pop and terrorism fell into the same category. "Death metal" on the other hand says what most people think that is what the genre sings of... Death.

I do agree with you though that you should listen to the lyrics before judging a song, although with some of that music (I don't know if it was Death Metal I listened to, but they were just yelling and banging their guitars) you can't understand a word they're saying.

My mom thinks that I listen to "hard" music, which is actually very tame compared to other stuff. She'd have a heart attack if she actually heard some of the other stuff I've heard. wink.gif
AlterEgo
hey...adam...ever learn about hyperbole in any of your English classes...it's kind of "exageration to prove a point"...

The pop music comment was a JOKE....a hyperbole.... tongue.gif

the point being that you can't judge a genre by it's name...

And people who are into a certain type of music do understand the lyrics...my grandparents complained that they couldn't understand Elvis...but my parents had no trouble understanding him...

I tend to like stuff about a step down in "scream factor" than WOB...I can listen to that stuff a little bit, and sort of understand a word or two...but I end up just reading the lyrics...

I just bought the new Blindside cd...you should check them out...much harder than what you listen to, but not nearly so hard as what WOB likes...

They are getting some radio play on the secular stations here in UT...and they have some very explicitly Christian lyrics that are quite understandable...so I think its cool.

(oh, btw, some country songs are about trucks...yep)
Adam
Oh yeah, forgot about the trucks. smile.gif

"hyperbole" is that kind of like the Super Bowl? wink.gif I actually don't even recall that from English class, but that's not anything new since I never paid much attention. rolleyes.gif

Blindside - I'll check them out. Name sounds familiar, but can't remember.
AlterEgo
Go 'Niners!!!!!

They are a swedish group...I like them...

Jesus used hyperbole...like when he said to cut your arm off rather than sin with it...I have always liked the word...it sounds cool...oh...the "e" isn't silent...it is pronounced hy-PER-bo-lee

(hmmm...su-PER-bo-lee...that is what I will call the super bowl from now on...)
Sarahwho
I would name the CD, "Enchantment"

http://godcares.scripterz.org/default2.htm
AlterEgo
that is way cool...I like fairies...

what kind of music would it be?
Sarahwho
The band would play alternative Christian music - not head smashing, and not elevator either.
AlterEgo
cool...

OK...here's a poppy punk band...
