Abduction attempt shocks towns
THE twin hinterland towns of Woombye and Palmwoods were reeling last night as police investigating the disappearance of 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe were put on alert after an attempted adbuction.
Police last night said a man attempted to abduct a teenage girl at 6.30pm.
They said the Woombye girl fought off a man who attempted to drag her into a light-coloured sedan in Panorama Drive, Nambour.
Police said the man, possibly aged about 30 and wearing a red T-shirt, tried to get the girl into his car, possibly a Commodore.
Sergeant Ian Brown said that due to the ''sketchy'' description of the man and the vehicle, there was little to suggest there was a connection between the incident and the disappearance of Daniel Morcombe.
''We're making inquiries into tonight's incident, but we're not linking the two at this stage.'' Meanwhile, police are desperate for information about the missing Palmwoods teenager who was last seen with a man at a bus stop near the Kiel Mountain overpass at 2.10pm on Sunday.
Police admit it is looking almost certain the 13-year-old Siena Catholic College student was abducted.
The full-scale search for Daniel enters its fifth day today, with 40 police recruits to join more than 60 weary SES volunteers scouring bushland in a vastly extended search area around Palmwoods and Woombye.
Divers will also continue searching farm dams in the area.
Police yesterday renewed their calls for anyone who saw Daniel at the bus stop or anywhere else that afternoon to contact them as soon as possible.
They also displayed a fob watch identical to one he was wearing at the time of his disappearance, in the hope it would open new leads.
Daniel was last seen talking to an unidentified man at a bus stop under the Kiel Mountain overpass on the Nambour Connection Road at about 2.
10pm on Sunday.
Several witnesses on a bus have confirmed the pair were there, but by the time the next bus arrived, less than five minutes later, the man and the boy had disappeared.
''We've received nothing in the way of sightings after he disappeared,'' Detective Inspector John Maloney told a media conference yesterday.
''A number of people have seen a male person and Daniel in that vicinity, and obviously there's a lot more people that have seen something that are yet to come forward.
''But we haven't received any information in relation to sightings after that point.'' In an attempt to avoid influencing people's memories, police would not be issuing a description of the man until they had spoken to as many witnesses as possible, he said.
''We've still got several witnesses we haven't spoken to and it's important we talk to all of them before we start releasing a general description of the man.
''I urge those people to come forward as quickly as possible to give us their recollections.'' Det Insp Maloney yesterday called people in the immediate area to check their properties, particularly those who lived on acreage.
''Walk around it.
Check any vehicles that are on it.
Check any old sheds and do it today please, if you can,'' he said.
He displayed a fob watch identical to one Daniel had on him when he went missing.
The silver watch has a gold inscription plate with the word ''Dan'' engraved on it.
Police are also keen to talk to five motorcyclists who were in the area at the time the first bus went past.
One of them may have briefly pulled off the road near Daniel and the man.
''We haven't heard from any of these motorcyclists and we'd like them to come forward.
''There were also two people ? either a husband and wife or brother and sister ? who were on the first bus.
''They did ring Crimestoppers and said they were staying with relatives here but the surname and contact details they provided were incorrect and we've been unable to find them.
''If they could ring us again we'll come around and see them straight away.'' Staff, students and parents of Siena Catholic College will hold a prayer service today at 11am for the teenager's safe return.
Siena parents wanting to help cater for the searchers have been asked to bring food to today's prayer service or to the search headquarters at the Suncoast Christian Outreach Church on the Nambour Connection Road.
