OVERVIEW

The world with all its international interplays can look so confusing, yet God`s word tells us that He is directing world governments, in His time frame, to His destination.
I would like to look at how the nations developed, how they ruled & then show God`s time frame for dealing with them. Many people may know the details presented, however I hope to high light a strong line concerning government. God gives that responsibility to man in early history & then shows us the world rulers & great powers, right up to our time. Thus I hope to bring a greater clarity to what God has purposed.

These are the topics I hope to cover –

1. Formation of the Nations.

2. Israel, God`s Special Nation.

3. God`s Time Frame for the Nations.

BEGINNINGS.

Q. Who were the first people?

In the beginning God created man and woman, (Adam and Eve) and placed them in the garden of Eden. God told them to –

`...be fruitful and multiply: fill the earth & subdue it; have dominion over....` (Gen. 1: 28)

However it was only after the fall, that Adam and Eve began to have children. Cain was the first born, Abel was second. Later Cain killed Abel, and then wandered the earth. Adam and Eve had another boy, and named him Seth. More children followed, sons and daughters. (Gen. 5: 4)

Because people lived for hundreds of years the family group developed quickly, with people being able to marry sisters and brothers as the genetics had not deteriorated as today.

Cain married and built the city of Enoch, named after his son Enoch. Cain became the head of the first civilization on earth.

`Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son – Enoch.` (Gen. 4: 17)

When Seth had a son then people began to call on the name of the Lord. From his line came many people who looked to God.

`And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.` (Gen. 4: 26)

Government.

God gave man dominion over the earth but when Adam disobeyed God he forfeited that to Satan who held sway over him. Judgment was in the hands of God & we see that when He punished Cain.

Q. What was the first Civilization like?

The first civilization started by Cain were not mere savages, but had many skills. They had attained to a considerable degree of civilisation.

Builders `And Cain....built a city.` (Gen. 4: 17)

Herdsmen  `And Adah (wife of Cain`s grandson) bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.` (Gen. 4: 20)

Musician  `His brother`s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.` (Gen. 4: 21)

Craftsmen  `And as for Zillah, (the other wife of Cain`s grandson), she bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron.` (Gen. 4: 22)

Even though the people had families and developed their skills in many ways, most people`s hearts were not turned to God. Wickedness and evil prevailed and the earth was filled with violence.

`Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.` (Gen. 6: 5, 11 – 13)

Thus it came about that God judged mankind for their evil ways, but spared Noah and his family as he was –

`...a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.` (Gen. 6: 9)

Thanks Tim, yes that really shows that God has given mankind skills and abilities and we are not Neanderthal people. I`m working in this series, towards how God instituted government and who were the first world rulers and how they ruled. In the follow up series on Countdown I would like to show what God reveals about our contemporary world. Hope you can contribute.

all the best. Marilyn.

AFTER THE FLOOD.

Q. Where did Noah`s descendants go?

After the flood God told Noah and his sons –

`...be fruitful and multiply: bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.` (Gen. 9: 7)

Noah`s sons and their wives then has many children and they in turn had children also. They travelled from Mount Ararat in the east and came to a plain in the land of Shinar and dwelt there.

They should have spread out and repopulated the earth as God said, but instead they decided to build a city and a tower in defiance of God.

`They said to one another,
“Come, let us build ourselves as city, and a tower
whose top is in the heavens;
let us make a name for ourselves,
lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.`
(Gen. 11: 4)

The people thought that they could establish a world empire that would be independent of God. This would mean power and control be a few, `lording it over,` others, which is man`s way of operating.

The city was called Babel or Babylon.

In judgment God sent a confusion of tongues and scattered them abroad. (Gen. 11: 8 & 9)

Government.

After the flood God establishes human government – the government of man by man. The highest function of government is the judicial taking of life. All other governmental powers are implied in that. Man is now responsible to govern the world for God.

`Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, & from the hand of man. From the hand of every man`s brother I will require the life of man.
Whoever sheds man`s blood, by man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man. (Gen. 9: 5 & 6)

Forming of the Nations.

Q. How did the Nations form?

After God judged mankind at Babel the people were scattered, North, South & East. They became different ethnic groups, nations speaking different languages according to Noah`s three sons.

Shem, Ham & Japheth.

`These were the sons of Shem (or Ham, or Japheth)
according to their families,
according to their languages, in their lands,
according to their nations. `
(Gen. 10: 31. 5, 20)

ARABIA: Shem`s sons settled in Arabia and to the east.

`...their dwelling-place was from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, The mountains of the east.` (Gen. 10: 30)

AFRICA: Ham`s sons settled in Africa to the South.

Nimrod, a descendant of Ham was a mighty hunter & his descendants worked their way up the Tigris river, then south through Canaan to Africa. (summary)
(Gen. 10: 9 & 19)

EUROPE: Japheth`s sons settled in Europe to the north.

`...from these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles Were separated into their own lands...` (Gen. 10: 5)

Nation – Gk. word `ethnos,` meaning a race of the same habit, a tribe of people.

EARLY NATIONS

Q. Who were the most powerful nations?

Many nations developed around the Middle East.
Assyrians, Canaanites, Amorites, & many other ...ites, Philistines, Egyptians, etc.
(Gen. 10)

The most powerful nations however, were Assyria in the north and Egypt, in the south. There is quite a lot written about them in the Bible as God had many dealings with them.

ASSYRIA in the North.

Asshur, a son of Shem, at first dwelt in the plains of Shinar. Later he led his family and descendants up the Tigris where they finally settled. This area he named Assyria, meaning the region and empire of Asshur.

In time Assyria developed into a large and powerful empire taking in many other surrounding tribes and nations. (Gen. 10: 9 – 11, & 22)

EGYPT in the South.

This was a great nation that developed from Ham`s descendants. They worked their way up the Tigris river, then across to Canaan, where they settled, (Canaanites). Later they travelled south through Gaza and down to the area that came to be known as Egypt. (Gen. 10: 15 – 20)

Egypt is often called the land of the pyramids and Pharaohs. It had a highly developed civilization with writing, astronomy, agriculture etc. They worshipped many `gods` and build temples to them. Much of this nation can still be seen today in their enormous structures.
