This German Shepherd was caught for at least an hour in our L.A. River (flood control channel) during our heavy rains. The dog got frightened and ran further away from them into the waters. Firefighters were able to rescue him finally....

The firefighter who rescued the dog did get bitten but they think it was only out of fear with the bad water conditions and also the helicopter making alot of noise above the dog and rescuer.

The dog (a handsome German Shepherd) made the front page of the L.A. Times! He also has some photos and a story inside the paper.
Many people have called wanting to adopt Vernon. (The fire fighters that rescued him named him Lucky, but the animal shelter named him Vernon after the city in which he was saved.)

Well, Vernon is actually named Spikey. His owners came forward and Spikey is now at home. The lady thinks one of her 45 grandchildren left the yard's gate open! Some nice video of Spikey and his pal who also got loose from the yard.
